Ahmedabad to Build Two New AMTS Electric Bus Depots
Ahmedabad plans to build two modern AMTS electric bus depots at Nikol and Tragad to support its expanding EV bus fleet and improve charging infrastructure.
Ahmedabad is set to expand its electric public transport infrastructure as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has proposed to build two new AMTS electric bus depots in Nikol-Kathwada and Tragad. The civic body plans to invest approximately ₹90 crore in the project to support the growing fleet of electric buses and improve city bus operations. The proposal has been placed before the AMC General Board for approval.
Nikol and Tragad depots will support the growing EV fleet.
The larger depot at Nikol-Kathwada will be built at an estimated cost of ₹61.89 crore and will have the capacity to charge 114 electric buses simultaneously, making it one of the largest electric bus charging facilities in Ahmedabad.
The Tragad depot, estimated to cost ₹28.08 crore, will also feature modern charging infrastructure to support the expansion of the AMTS electric bus fleet.
New Charging Stations Also Planned
Apart from the two depots, AMC has proposed additional charging stations at:
- Ghuma Terminus (Estimated cost: ₹1.82 crore)
- Lal Darwaja (Near Ritz Hotel, Nehru Bridge end) (Estimated cost: ₹2.65 crore)
The Ghuma charging station will allow around five electric buses to recharge during scheduled breaks, helping improve fleet efficiency.
AMTS Aims to Expand Electric Bus Fleet
Currently, AMTS operates 111 electric buses across Ahmedabad. The municipal corporation plans to gradually replace its older CNG buses and expand the fleet to approximately 1,500 electric buses in the coming years. To support this transition, AMC is also planning to upgrade the power infrastructure at the Vasna, Vadaj, Memnagar, and Lal Darwaza depots.
Government Pushes Digital Ticketing
The Delhi government is introducing the Pink Saheli Smart Card to replace paper-based pink tickets with a digital system. Officials say the NCMC-enabled card will simplify free bus travel for women while allowing commuters to use the same card for Delhi Metro, Namo Bharat services, and other digital payments after recharge.
