Delhi Metro Adds 20 Extra Trips Under GRAP Stage-I
Delhi Metro will run 20 extra weekday trips from October 22, 2026, as GRAP Stage-I takes effect, alongside intensified pollution-control measures.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will run 20 additional trains on weekdays from October 22, 2026, following the implementation of the first phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR. The move is aimed at encouraging commuters to use public transport instead of private vehicles in view of the deteriorating air quality in the national capital.
Along with the increase in train services, the DMRC has announced stringent pollution control measures at its construction sites and surrounding areas. These initiatives include dust control, road cleaning, garbage removal, and inspections to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
Delhi Metro to operate 20 additional trips from October 22
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, additional services will operate on weekdays from Monday to Friday, starting Thursday, October 22. The increased services are aimed at making public transport more accessible to commuters during this time of increased pollution.
The DMRC announced this decision after the implementation of GRAP Phase-I measures in Delhi-NCR on October 21. The additional services are part of the corporation's efforts to encourage people to leave their personal vehicles at home and use the metro for daily commutes.
DMRC intensifies anti-pollution measures
Along with the increased train services, the DMRC will intensify dust control activities at construction sites and surrounding roads. These measures include cleaning roads, removing debris from sidewalks and road dividers, and ensuring that construction materials are properly covered.
DMRC engineers will also inspect wheel-wash facilities at construction sites to ensure that vehicles do not spread mud and dust onto public roads. Approximately 31 kilometers of city roads are under the corporation's temporary jurisdiction for metro construction, and most of these roads have already been repaired to help prevent dust pollution.
Over 250 anti-smog and mist guns installed
The DMRC has installed more than 250 anti-smog guns and mist guns at construction sites, metro stations, and office buildings. Its environmental department also conducts daily inspections to monitor compliance with environmental norms.
GRAP Stage-I implemented in Delhi-NCR
After Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) slipped into the 'poor' category, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented GRAP Stage-I in Delhi-NCR on October 21, 2026.
Delhi's AQI increased from 179 on October 20 to 244 at 2 pm on October 21. GRAP Stage-I is implemented when the AQI is between 201 and 300.
Major measures under GRAP Phase-I
- Dust control at construction and demolition sites.
- Mechanical road sweeping and water sprinkling as needed.
- Proper waste disposal and action against open burning.
- Inspection of polluting vehicles and enforcement of emission standards.
- Measures to improve traffic management and encourage clean transportation options.
Additional metro services and strict dust control measures are part of a broader effort to combat pollution in Delhi-NCR. Their overall impact on air quality will also depend on weather conditions, vehicle emissions, and other sources of pollution.
