Mumbai commuters demand more BEST bus routes to improve daily public transport

Mumbai commuters have urged BEST to launch more bus routes via the Eastern Freeway and Atal Setu, aiming to improve connectivity and reduce travel time.

Mumbai commuters have urged the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking to introduce more bus routes via the Eastern Freeway and Atal Setu to improve connectivity between Mumbai, the eastern suburbs, and Navi Mumbai. This demand was raised during a joint meeting of the BEST committee and the passenger rights group Aapli BEST Aapli Aachsathi (ABA).

More routes proposed on the Eastern Freeway

During the meeting, commuter representatives suggested increasing the use of the Eastern Freeway for faster bus services. They proposed extending the existing A-502 and A-504 bus routes to the Wadala depot and introducing additional high-speed services connecting Ghatkopar and other eastern suburbs to South Mumbai.

According to passengers, these changes will reduce travel time and encourage more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles.

Better Bus Services via Atal Setu

The passenger group also demanded improved BEST bus connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai via the Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link). They stated that more direct and regular bus services on this corridor would speed up travel and help attract daily commuters who currently rely on private vehicles.

150 More Electric Double-Decker Buses Are Being Planned

The meeting also reviewed the expansion of BEST's electric bus fleet. BEST General Manager Sonia Sethi informed the members that 50 electric double-decker buses have already been inducted and are currently in service.

She further explained that the delivery of the remaining 150 electric double-decker buses has been delayed due to technical issues related to the terms of the contract. Once delivered, these new buses are expected to strengthen BEST's public transport network across Mumbai.

BEST Committee Reviews Suggestions

BEST Committee Chairperson Trishna Vishwasrao directed officials to examine the proposals submitted by the passenger group and implement viable recommendations as soon as possible. The discussion also included issues such as route planning, staff shortages, and improving overall passenger services as part of efforts to build a more efficient and passenger-friendly bus network.
