Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has written to Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, seeking his intervention to expedite the central government's final approval for the long-pending Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project. In the letter to the Union Minister, Revanth Reddy stated that the central government had granted in-principle approval to the project through a letter dated January 15, 2026. That letter also proposed the formation of a joint committee of central and state officials, with Telangana nominated to nominate two members. This joint committee will oversee the transfer process for Phase 1 of the Hyderabad Metro.

On September 25, the Telangana government signed an agreement with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMHRL) for the complete acquisition of the existing Phase-I of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project after L&T decided to exit the project due to mounting losses. Under the agreement, the state government agreed to assume L&T's existing debt of around Rs 13,000 crore as well as return Rs 2,000 crore to the company as a one-time settlement of its equity investment.

The government agency has sought government approval to issue a tender for the new six-coach train sets, and intends to take this step without linking the purchase to the approval of the second phase.

The expansion work is being carried out at a fast pace and though the initial estimate of affected properties was 1,100, innovative engineering solutions have reduced the number to 886.

This new route will connect Miyapur to Patancheru, covering a distance of 13.4 km and includes ten proposed stations including Patancheru, Miyapur, Alwyn X Road, Madinaguda, Chanda Nagar, Jyothi Nagar, BHEL, RC Puram and Beeramguda. However, these station names are tentative and are subject to change.
