Kochi’s Metro and Water Metro will extend operations over the New Year period to handle an expected surge in passenger traffic, officials said. Metro services on the Edappally–Aluva and Edappally–Tripunithura corridors will be extended until 11 pm from 26 December to 3 January. On New Year’s Eve, 31 December, trains will run at 20-minute intervals late into the night, continuing until 1.30 am. According to the schedule, the last Metro trains will depart from Aluva and Tripunithura at 1.30 am, while the final service from Edappally will leave at 2 am.

Weighing 80 tonnes and manufactured at the casting yard in Kalamassery, the pier cap was installed on the pillars with the help of a heavy-duty crane. The pier cap was installed at pillar number 281 on Infopark Expressway.

Kochi Metro Phase 2 includes a 11.2 km long new metro line (Pink Line) connecting JLN Stadium - Infopark II. The project is being implemented in two phases. The initial phase includes the first five stations of the proposed corridor connecting JLN Stadium to Kakkanad and is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2026. The remaining five stations will be developed in the second phase, which is targeted to be completed by December 2026.

◷ 2025-08-04 | ☍On ManoramaThe Kochi metro will operate special services on Wednesday for those visiting the Siva Temple in Aluva as part of ‘Karkidaka Vavu’. The trains will thus operate from the Thripunithura terminal station until 11.30 p.m. (instead of the last train from the terminal station at 10.30 p.m.) for them to reach Aluva. One train will leave the station at 11 p.m. and the other at 11.30 p.m. On Thursday, metro services will begin from the Aluva terminal station at 5 p.m. The next train will operate at 5.30 p.m., followed by regular services from 6 p.m., says a KMRL release.

"We've experienced twice the normal ridership from 6.30 to 7.30 am and then from 8 am onwards. We've increased the frequency of metro services for which we have injected two additional cars," said a KMRL spokesperson.

Under the new system, which will come into effect from July 1, a 30-day travel package will be offered for Rs 1,100. The pass will provide 50 trips between two stations and offer a discount of 33% on the average/average travel fare. The three-month package costs Rs 3,000.

Of the 15 buses, four will ply on the Aluva-Airport route, running every 20 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes during off-peak hours from 6:45 am to 11 pm. The fare for a journey up to 5 km in regular AC feeder buses is ₹20, while the same buses with relatively larger seats will cost ₹80 for travelling in the longer Aluva-International Airport corridor.

Sources in Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), in-charge of the project, said 95 per cent of the DPR work has been completed. There will be a meeting of DMRC and KMRL officials on Friday to decide the next step. KMRL said that there will be discussion related to the project before submission.
