Delhi Metro Begins Blue Line Refurbishment
DMRC starts Blue Line refurbishment to improve safety and passenger comfort
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a major mid-life refurbishment program for trains running on the Blue Line, a major step towards improving passenger safety, reliability and onboard experience. The upgrade comes as several train sets have completed more than a decade of service on one of Delhi's busiest corridors.
DMRC begins phased renovation of Blue Line trains
Under this comprehensive upgrade project, DMRC is renovating a total of 70 trains on the Blue and Red Lines in multiple phases. Twelve trains have already been renovated in the first phase, while 18 trains will be renovated in the second phase. Work on additional trains is ongoing, and 22 more Blue Line trains are scheduled to be renovated by November 2027.
These trains were inducted between 2002 and 2007 and have completed nearly two decades of service, so mid-life upgrades are necessary to maintain efficiency and reliability.
Major Technology and Safety Upgrades
This renovation includes major improvements to both onboard systems and passenger safety features. These upgrades are designed to bring older trains up to the standards of new metro rolling stock.
Safety Enhancements
- Installation of advanced fire detection systems with smoke and heat sensors
- Replacement of outdated relays and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs)
- Upgraded electrical systems for improved reliability
Improved Passenger Information and Comfort Features
To improve the passenger experience, DMRC has introduced modern passenger information and communication systems on refurbished trains. These upgrades aim to provide real-time travel information, improved safety monitoring, and greater convenience for daily commuters.
New Passenger Amenities
- IP-based Passenger Announcement and Information System (PA-PIS)
- LCD-based dynamic route maps with real-time updates
- CCTV surveillance systems for enhanced security
- Emergency communication systems between passengers and operators
- Mobile and laptop charging points in all coaches
Interior Refurbishment and System Modernisation
Along with technical upgrades, DMRC is also focusing on improving the interiors of the trains. The passenger area and driver cabin are being repainted and repaired to address wear and tear caused by long-term use. Electrical panels and other essential parts are being modernised to improve the overall performance of the train and ensure smooth operation.
DMRC Leadership Oversight and Implementation
DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar reviewed the progress of the refurbishment program and inspected the first train upgraded under Phase 3 before it is reintroduced into passenger service. This initiative reflects DMRC's continued commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, reliability and passenger satisfaction across the Delhi Metro network.
