About Agra Red Fort

The Red Fort of Agra, commonly known as Agra Fort, is a large 16th-century Mughal fort located in the Rakabganj area of ​​Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Built by Emperor Akbar in 1565, the fort served as the royal residence and administrative center of the Mughal Empire until the capital moved to Delhi. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it attracts tourists from around the world for its historical significance and its proximity to the Taj Mahal. Spanning approximately 380,000m² (approximately 94 acres), the fort's red sandstone walls and blend of Persian, Timurid, and Indian architectural influences underscore its cultural and tourist importance.

Architecture of Agra Red Fort

The Red Fort in Agra is an example of Mughal architecture, blending Islamic, Persian, and Indian influences. It was commissioned by Shah Jahan during the Mughal period (1565–1573). The fort was built using red sandstone and marble, employing advanced masonry techniques of the time. Its design emphasizes both defensive capability and aesthetic appeal, featuring high ramparts, bastions, and distinctive gateways. The fort's square layout, divided into private royal quarters and public administrative areas, reflects the characteristic symmetry and spatial order of Mughal urban planning. The intricate carvings, ornamental domes, and floral designs reflect the imperial decorative style, while its location on the banks of the Yamuna River enhanced its significance.
