About Fatehpur Sikri Fort Complex
The Fatehpur Sikri Fort Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Mughal emperor Akbar between 1571 and 1585 as the imperial capital of his empire. Located near Agra, the city commemorates Akbar's victory over Gujarat and his devotion to the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti. Spread over approximately 240 hectares (about 2.4 square kilometres), this complex is of great cultural and tourism importance. Its features include planned courtyards, large gateways and religious buildings, which showcase a fusion of Persian, Islamic and indigenous Indian architectural influences.
Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri Fort Complex
Fatehpur Sikri displays classic Mughal architecture, deeply influenced by Persian, Hindu, Jain, and Central Asian traditions. It was commissioned by Emperor Akbar (1556–1605) and developed as his capital from 1571. The design emphasizes symmetry, axial planning, and integration with the landscape. Built almost entirely of red sandstone, the complex employs traditional trabeate (post-and-lintel) and arcuate (arch) construction techniques, showcasing a balance between advanced engineering and aesthetics.
The site’s urban grid and water management systems reflect sophisticated planning, while ornamental elements such as carved screens (jalis), brackets, chhatris (domed pavilions), and calligraphy illustrate cultural pluralism in layout and decoration.
