Places to Visit in Guwahati

Guwahati is the largest metropolis of the state of Assam and is rightly called the gateway to northeast India. It is the prime center for commerce and education in the northeast. The sprawling city stretches along the banks of the Brahmaputra. It is a visitor's delight and a hotspot of a splendid biodiversity. The city has a lot to offer to visitors with its magnificent and enigmatic temples, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and prominent centers of cultural and historical significance. Umananda Temple, Guwahati

Umananda Temple is situated atop a hill called Bhasmakala on the riverine Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra River. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva and the main shrine can be reached by a flight of steep steps. Unlike a typical temple, the shrine allows the visitors to immerse souls in its serene and surreal environment. It has rock-cut figures which exhibit exquisite Assamese skill. The temple remains well connected to the other parts of the city and can be reached by ferries and streamers available at Kachari Ghat, Guwahati.

Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati

It is one of the 108 Shaktipeeths and an important seat of tarantism in India. It is dedicated to goddess Kamakhya who is believed to symbolize creativity, power and fertility. Located on the Nilachal Hill, Guwahati this is the only temple in the country that celebrates the essence of womanhood. The temple consists of four chambers the garbhagrihya and three mandapas. During Ambubachi Mela held in June every year, it attracts thousands of pilgrims from all around the world. It is believed that during this stretch the goddess enters her annual menstrual cycle.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Guwahati

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is at a distance of about 48km from Guwahati the sanctuary lies nestled in the grasslands along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra in the Morigaon district. Its compelling rich biodiversity attracts visitors and nature admirers from all over the globe. It is the abode to the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world and other animals like leopard, wild boar, barking deer, wild buffalo, etc, 2000 migratory birds and various reptiles. Dipor Bil, Guwahati

Dipor Bil is located at a distance of 18kms from Guwahati the lake is widely acclaimed for its pristine beauty and exceptional avifaunal diversity. Etymologically Dipa means elephant and beel means large aquatic body and thus this is a wetland inhabited by elephants. It remains fringed by Rani Garbhanga Reserved Forests and is endowed with rich floral and faunal biodiversity. Assam State Museum, Guwahati

Assam State Museum is located in the heart of Guwahati city at the southern end of Dighali Pukhuri tank the museum buzzes with the activity of history buffs and tourists from across the globe. Kaziranga National Park, Guwahati

Navagraha Temple, Guwahati

Perched on the top of the Navagraha hills it has nine consecrated Shivlings dedicated to the nine celestial bodies or the grahas. It is an 18th-century marvel built in the archaic shikhara style. The temple has a dome inlaid with an impressive beehive architectural design, an ornate edifice, and offers spectacular views of the Brahmaputra river. Madan Kamdev, Guwahati

Widely acclaimed as the Khajuraho of Assam, this archeological site is located at around 40kms from Guwahati on Dewangiri hillock. The site continues to be a historical enigma as little is known about its origin. Ruins of around twelve temples dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries have been unraveled here. The garbhagriha of the main temple houses a stone idol of shiva and his consort Parvati in an intimate embrace.
