About Sardar Manzil
Sardar Manzil is a historic administrative palace located in the Naqqar Khana, Peer Gate area of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It was built in the early 20th century during the reign of Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum, the last ruling Begum of the Bhopal State. The building served as a durbar hall and later as a center of governance and public administration. Although the exact area of the land is not officially recorded, the monument is built on a designated plot within the old city of Bhopal. Its design reflects Indo-Islamic traditions combined with colonial planning principles, emphasizing symmetry, functionality, and civic authority.
Architecture of Sardar Manzil
Sardar Manzil is an example of late Indo-Islamic architecture influenced by colonial-era administrative design. It was commissioned during the Bhopal State period under Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum between 1901 and 1926, a time marked by institutional reforms and urban development. The structure was built using brick masonry finished with lime plaster, a common and durable construction technique of the period. Load-bearing walls, high ceilings, and thick masonry helped regulate indoor temperatures, demonstrating climate-responsive engineering.
The building follows a symmetrical plan centered around a large hall used for official gatherings. Architectural elements such as arched openings, colonnaded corridors, and balanced elevations reflect restraint and authority rather than decoration. Symbolically, the orderly layout represented disciplined governance and administrative transparency during Sultan Jahan Begum’s progressive rule.
