Umananda Temple, Guwahati
Umananda Temple is situated atop a hill called Bhasmakala on the riverine Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra River. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva and the main shrine can be reached by a flight of steep steps. Unlike a typical temple, the shrine allows the visitors to immerse souls in its serene and surreal environment. It has rock-cut figures which exhibit exquisite Assamese skill. The temple remains well connected to the other parts of the city and can be reached by ferries and streamers available at Kachari Ghat, Guwahati.
Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati
It is one of the 108 Shaktipeeths and an important seat of tarantism in India. It is dedicated to goddess Kamakhya who is believed to symbolize creativity, power and fertility. Located on the Nilachal Hill, Guwahati this is the only temple in the country that celebrates the essence of womanhood. The temple consists of four chambers the garbhagrihya and three mandapas. During Ambubachi Mela held in June every year, it attracts thousands of pilgrims from all around the world. It is believed that during this stretch the goddess enters her annual menstrual cycle.
Navagraha Temple, Guwahati
Perched on the top of the Navagraha hills it has nine consecrated Shivlings dedicated to the nine celestial bodies or the grahas. It is an 18th-century marvel built in the archaic shikhara style. The temple has a dome inlaid with an impressive beehive architectural design, an ornate edifice, and offers spectacular views of the Brahmaputra river. Research activities related to astronomy and astrology are also conducted here. The temple witnesses throngs of pilgrims day in and day out.
