Kamakhya Temple is situated on the Nilanchal hill in the western part of Guwahati in Assam. It is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, who is considered a symbol of creativity, strength and fertility. The temple was built during the Mlechha dynasty in the 8th-9th century. According to Kalika Purana, the Kamakhya temple refers to the place where Shiva's vagina fell after the ordeal of Sati along with the corpse of Sati.
The temple has a four-chambered sanctum sanctorum and three mandapas. Kamakhya Temple organizes an annual fertility festival known as Ambubasi Puja. It is believed that the goddess's menstruation takes place during this time. During this, thousands of devotees come to the temple to offer prayers.
