Shahpir's Tomb is one of the popular monuments of Meerut which is considered to be the oldest tomb of North India. The monument was built in honor of Shahpir by Nur Jahan in 1628 during the Mughal period. Shahpir was the physician and advisor to Emperor Jahangir's teacher Nur Jahan. The monument, the adjoining pillars and the lush green gardens all around make Shapir a must see in the city.
Architecture of Shahpeer Sahab ki Dargah
Bright red sandstone is used in the construction of the entire tomb with beautiful carvings of traditional motifs and floral designs. The structure is incomplete without a roof, but there are many arches and pillars near the main tomb which could have been in the original plan to close the structure.
Interesting facts about Shahpeer Sahab ki Dargah
- It is believed that the structure went into plan within 24 hours of Shahpir's death.
- It is one of the oldest tombs (450 years old) and has been around even before the construction of the Taj Mahal.
- Despite this tomb having an open roof, the rain water does not reach the main tomb.
- There are two different theories on why the structure is incomplete. One of them is that Jahangir left for the war in Kashmir where he breathed his last. and, the fall of another Nur Jahan with the saint, thereby ordering the construction to stop.
