About Shaheed Minar

Shaheed Minar, located at Esplanade in Kolkata, is an important historical monument connected with India’s freedom movement. It was originally built in 1828 during the British period as the Ochterlony Monument and was later renamed Shaheed Minar to honor the martyrs of the 1905 Bengal Partition movement. Spread over about 1.6 hectares, the monument reflects a mix of classical Greek and Egyptian styles along with colonial design ideas. The tall column, topped with a lotus-shaped capital, stands on a raised platform surrounded by a landscaped garden. Simple yet impressive in appearance, Shaheed Minar represents both colonial history and the spirit of India’s independence struggle. Today, it is a well-known cultural landmark and a popular tourist attraction in Kolkata.

Architecture of Shaheed Minar

Shaheed Minar is built in the Neo-Classical architectural style, which was popular in the early 19th century and draws inspiration from Greek, Egyptian, and British colonial designs. It was constructed in 1828 by the British East India Company and designed by architect J. P. Parker under colonial supervision. Over time, the monument was modified and renamed to honor India’s freedom fighters, while its original structure and grand scale were preserved. The tall column stands on a high platform and features simple vertical grooves and a decorated base. The design reflects careful engineering and balanced proportions, giving the monument a strong yet elegant appearance that continues to attract visitors today. Key structures and features include:

  • Main column with lotus-shaped capital
  • Elevated podium and plinth
  • Surrounding landscaped garden with pathways
  • Commemorative plaques and inscriptions
  • Viewing platform at the top
  • Stone staircases providing access to the column base
