Gyan Vapi Well, Varanasi

The Gyan Vapi Well is a historic stepwell near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex in Varanasi. Built in the 17th century during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb, during the late Mughal period, it provided water to temple devotees and local residents, as well as for ritual and financial purposes. Spread over an area of approximately 1,500 square metres, the well showcases Indo-Islamic architectural elements with the precision of Mughal engineering. Its features include steeply stepped roofs, stone masonry and decorative railings. The well displays a blend of practical and religious symbols, reflecting Varanasi's cultural and spiritual significance as a holy city.
