Situated on the eastern bank of the Ganges in Varanasi, Ramnagar Fort was built in the 18th century during the reign of Maharaja Balwant Singh of the princely state of Banaras. Serving as the royal residence of the rulers of Banaras, the fort reflects the region's cultural and political significance and remains a major attraction for heritage tourists. Spread over approximately 15 hectares, the fort showcases a blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural elements, including carved balconies, strong walls and a complex of courtyards. Its wooden and sandstone structures, with their ornamental gateways, reflect the aristocracy of Awadh and its blend of defensive and residential design principles.

Ramnagar Fort represents an eclectic blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles. Constructed under Maharaja Balwant Singh in the early 18th century, the fort was later expanded by his successors throughout the Benares princely era. Built primarily using sandstone, lime mortar, and teak wood, the fort demonstrates traditional construction techniques combined with defensive engineering innovations, such as thick ramparts and watchtowers.
