Built in 1726 CE by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of the Kachwaha dynasty to protect the Amer Fort and preserve royal weapons and treasures. The fort reflects the strategic priorities of the early modern Rajput kingdoms during the period of Mughal political influence. Covering an area of approximately 3 square kilometers, Jaigarh Fort is culturally significant for its intact defensive layout, historic artillery production, and continuing association with Jaipur's royal military history.
Architecture of Jaigarh Fort
Jaigarh Fort is an example of Rajput military architecture, combining functional and defensive planning. Built in 1726 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort served as a key military outpost for the Kachwaha rulers of Amer. The structure is primarily constructed using red sandstone, lime mortar, and rubble masonry, making it durable and resistant to attacks. The fort is built in a straight line along the Aravalli ridge, providing a clear view of the surrounding area. Engineering innovations include an advanced rainwater harvesting system with large underground tanks and interconnected channels, allowing the fort to function independently even during sieges. The decoration is minimal, yet elegant, although Rajput symbols such as chhatris and doors display royal authority and pride of battle..
