Diwan-e-Khas Hall of Private Audience, Jaipur

The Diwan-i-Khas, or Hall of Private Audiences, is a ceremonial hall inside Jaipur’s City Palace. Built in the early 18th century during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, it was used for private meetings between the king and important nobles or foreign guests. The hall is culturally important for its connection to royal governance and is a major heritage tourism site. Located within the City Palace, which covers about 7 acres, it features marble interiors, decorative pillars, and royal symbols, reflecting Rajput traditions influenced by Mughal design. The main attraction of the Diwan-i-Khas was the “Jagat Shiromani” or “Jewel of the World” throne, made of pure gold. This throne represented the grandeur of the Kachwaha dynasty and was used for coronations and important ceremonies. Today, the hall remains a historical treasure, attracting visitors worldwide who admire its architecture and royal heritage.

The Diwan-e-Khas is a fine example of Rajput architecture with strong Mughal influence, focusing on symmetry, decoration, and organized space planning. Built mainly with marble and sandstone joined with lime mortar, it showcases the skilled craftsmanship of the early 18th century. It was commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II (1699–1743), during a period of architectural growth in Jaipur. Later rulers of the Kachwaha dynasty preserved the hall carefully, keeping its original design intact.

The hall is famous for its polished marble floors, carved columns, and subtle decorative details, suited to private and administrative use.
