About Connaught Place
The official name of Connaught Place is Rajiv Chowk. It is the largest commercial and business center of Delhi. It is also known as CP. Connaught Place also has countless restaurants, watering holes, shops and cinema halls. It was developed as a showpiece of Lutyens' Delhi with a central business district. Named after the Duke of Connaught, construction work was started in 1929 and the work was completed in 1933.
Architecture of Connaught Place
Architect Robert Tor Russell designed Connaught Place to be named after the Duke of Connaught. While the Royal Crescent is a semi-circular and three-storey private structure, Connaught Place had only two-storey buildings, with the main floor being private. The location was around the expected total hover of the commercial foundation on the ground. In particular the areas designed by architect Edwin Lutyens, now known as the Lutyens Bungalow Zone (LBZ).
