About Atgah Khan’s Tomb
Atgah Khan’s Tomb in Delhi is the burial place of Shamsuddin Atgah Khan, a senior noble and the foster father of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The tomb was built soon after his death in 1562 CE, during Akbar’s reign, and represents the early stage of Mughal funerary architecture. The monument is culturally important and also a popular tourist site as it forms part of the larger Humayun’s Tomb complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on a raised stone platform, the tomb stands within a small enclosed area, although its exact total area is not officially recorded. Its simple decoration, geometric layout, and Persian-inspired design show the architectural shift from the Lodi style to the more developed Mughal style.
Architecture of Atgah Khan’s Tomb
Atgah Khan’s Tomb is built in the early Mughal architectural style and shows strong influence from Persian burial traditions. It was constructed in 1562 CE during the reign of Emperor Akbar and represents an important early stage of Mughal tomb design, before the construction of Humayun’s Tomb. The mausoleum follows an octagonal plan, which symbolizes balance and eternity, and is raised on a high stone platform to give it importance. The main building material is red sandstone, with limited use of marble decoration, carved stone panels, and jaali screens that allow light and air to pass through. The central domed chamber contains the grave, supported by strong stone masonry that ensures stability. The decoration is simple, focusing on proportion and geometric design, which is a key feature of early Akbari architecture.
