About Global Vipassana Pagoda
The Global Vipassana Pagoda was built as a tribute to the late Sayagyi U Ba Khin, a renowned Vipassana teacher, and as a commemoration of the 2,500th anniversary of the enlightenment of Lord Buddha. Its construction began in 2000 and was completed in 2008. This colossal project was spearheaded by the Global Vipassana Foundation, which aimed to create a center for the practice and promotion of Vipassana meditation.
Architecture of Global Vipassana Pagoda
The pagoda is an architectural masterpiece, featuring a massive white dome that's about 29 meters (95 feet) in height and 96.12 meters (316 feet) in diameter, making it one of the largest stone dome structures in the world. It's constructed entirely without the use of supporting pillars. The pagoda is built in the traditional Burmese architectural style and is made primarily of sandstone and concrete. The central hall can accommodate up to 8,000 meditators and is an awe-inspiring space for meditation and spiritual reflection.
