About Humayun's Tomb

Humayun's Tomb, near Jor Bagh in Delhi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a landmark of early Mughal architecture. Built between 1565 and 1572 CE, the tomb was commissioned by Empress Haji Begum during the reign of Emperor Akbar in memory of the Mughal emperor Humayun. Spread over approximately 27 hectares, the monument introduced the Persian-style charbagh garden layout to the Indian subcontinent. Its cultural and tourism significance lies in its architectural influence on later Mughal masterpieces, including the Taj Mahal. Built of red sandstone and white marble, the mausoleum reflects Persian, Timurid and Indian design traditions through its symmetrical plan, domed structure and decorative detailing.

Architecture of Humayun's Tomb

Humayun's Tomb displays a sophisticated Indo-Persian architectural style, reflecting a shift from earlier Sultanate traditions to more modern Mughal design. The monument was built under the Mughal dynasty, initiated by Haji Begum in 1565 CE and completed in 1572 CE during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, it stands on a high stone platform and follows a strict symmetrical layout. The double domes, use of red sandstone with white marble inlays, and proportional geometry showcase advanced engineering and aesthetic planning. The Charbagh Garden, divided by waterways, reflects the Islamic concept of paradise.
