About Jamali Kamali Mosque and Tomb
The Jamali Kamali Mosque and Tomb is a historical monument located in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, India. It is known for its architectural significance and association with the Sufi saint Jamali Kamali. Jamali was the pseudonym of a Sufi saint poet who was given a high position in the court of Sultan Sikandar Lodi as well as the first two Mughal emperors Babur and Humayun. Kamali is variously described as his follower, wife, lover, and brother, while the person's true identity has been lost to history. Their tombs in its precincts give the mosque its name.
The mosque and mausoleum were built in 1528–1529, and Jamali was buried in the mausoleum after his death in 1535. The mausoleum is a 7.6 m (25 ft) square structure with a flat roof, located on the northern side of the mosque. , Inside the chamber, the flat ceiling is plastered and ornately decorated. It is painted red and blue with some Quranic inscriptions, and the walls are decorated with colored tiles inscribed with poems by Jamali. The tomb's decoration has been described as giving the impression of "stepping into a jewel box". The tomb chamber of the Jamali Kamali Mosque and Mausoleum contains two marble tombs: one of the saint-poet Jamali and the other of Kamali.
