About Kanheri Caves

The Kanheri Caves, located inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, are a large group of Buddhist rock-cut caves dating from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. These caves were used as monasteries and learning centers, showing the spread of Buddhism along India’s western coast. The site covers about 105 hectares and includes more than 100 caves carved into basalt rock hills. Key features include chaityas (prayer halls), viharas (monks’ living cells), and detailed rock-cut sculptures. The caves show a mix of Hinayana and early Mahayana Buddhist traditions, with stupas, pillared halls, and inscriptions that reflect centuries of religious, cultural, and artistic development. Today, Kanheri Caves are an important heritage and tourism destination in Maharashtra.

Architecture of Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves are a strong example of ancient Indian rock-cut architecture, mainly designed as Buddhist monasteries. The caves show the gradual development of Buddhism from the Hinayana to the Mahayana tradition. Construction began during the Satavahana dynasty (1st century BCE – 2nd century CE), continued under the Abhira and Vakataka rulers, and reached major development by the 9th–10th centuries CE. Carved into basalt rock hills, the caves are carefully designed to use the natural landscape while providing spaces for meditation, worship, and living.

Key structural features include:

  • Over 100 rock-cut caves
  • Chaityas (prayer halls) with vaulted ceilings and stupas
  • Viharas (monastic residential cells)
  • Elaborate pillared halls
  • Water cisterns and rock-cut tanks
  • Inscriptions and sculptural reliefs depicting Buddhist iconography
