About Mahakali Caves

The Mahakali Caves, located in Chakala (JB Nagar), Mumbai, are an important group of ancient rock-cut caves dating from around the 1st century BCE to the 6th century CE. These caves were carved during the Satavahana period and later used by early Buddhist monks as places for living, meditation, and worship. Spread over about 0.5 hectares, the site shows early Buddhist building ideas mixed with local artistic styles. The caves include prayer halls (chaityas), living rooms for monks (viharas), and carved rock surfaces decorated with symbols such as stupas and lotus designs. Built along old trade routes, the Mahakali Caves highlight Mumbai’s ancient history and remain a key heritage and tourist attraction today.

Architecture of Mahakali Caves

Mahakali Caves are a fine example of early Buddhist rock-cut architecture, carved directly into solid black basalt rock between the 1st and 6th century CE. Developed during the Satavahana period and later phases of Buddhist activity, the caves reflect simple Hinayana traditions and the practical needs of monastic life. The complex is divided into two groups an older southeast cluster with fifteen caves and a smaller northwest cluster with four caves. These caves follow the natural shape of Mahakali Hill, showing how builders adapted their design to the landscape.

Most of the caves were used as viharas, or living and meditation spaces for monks. Cave 9 is the main chaitya, or prayer hall, with a curved roof and a central stupa used for worship and gatherings. Rock-cut water tanks and channels were created to collect rainwater, ensuring daily needs were met. Open verandahs, small courtyards, and simple carvings reflect the calm and disciplined Buddhist lifestyle. Ancient inscriptions in Pali script add historical importance, making the Mahakali Caves a valuable heritage and tourism site in Mumbai.
