About Qila Rai Pithora

Qila Rai Pithora, located in Mehrauli, Delhi, is one of the oldest forts in the city, built in the 12th century by King Prithviraj Chauhan. The fort shows how Delhi grew from a small regional stronghold into an important political center. Spanning about 2 square kilometers, the remaining structures show the fort’s importance for defense. It features early Rajput military design, including thick stone walls, towers, and gates. The layout was influenced by local Rajput and early Indian fort-building methods, with raised walls and layered defenses, giving a clear idea of how battles were fought and cities were planned in medieval times.

Architecture of Qila Rai Pithora

Qila Rai Pithora shows early Rajput fort design, later influenced by changes made during the Delhi Sultanate. The fort was first built by Prithviraj Chauhan (1178–1192 CE) and later expanded in the 13th century. Its design combines local Rajput military ideas with Islamic defensive techniques.

  • Main Gates: 3 primary entrances, including the historically significant Lal Kot Gate
  • Bastions: Numerous bastions along the perimeter walls designed for archers
  • Towers: Watchtowers strategically placed for surveillance
  • Courtyards: Open areas within the fort used for gatherings and military drills
  • Ramparts: Elevated walls built using rubble masonry and dressed stone
