Spread over approximately 90 acres, this area is built on two hills which are in the heart of the city. Its elevated terrain, bastions, and parade grounds reflect strategic European military planning adapted to Indian geography.
Architecture of Sitabuldi Fort
Sitabuldi Fort is a fine example of early 19th-century military architecture, combining Maratha hill fort techniques with British colonial engineering. Built after 1817 under the British East India Company, it was designed for both defense and military housing. The fort features thick stone walls, sloping bastions, and tall watchtowers to maximize visibility and artillery impact. Its compact layout focuses on strategic control of the surrounding area, demonstrating careful planning for surveillance and defense.
