About Tomb of Adham Khan
The Adham Khan Tomb is a 16th-century monument located in Mehrauli, Delhi. It was commissioned by Emperor Akbar in memory of his general and foster brother, Adham Khan, who died in 1562. The tomb's unique octagonal design combines early Mughal architecture with influences from Lodi and Sayyid styles, representing both history and controversy. Located near the old walls of Lal Kot and adjacent to the Qutub Minar, the tomb is a key cultural and historical site within the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. Its distinctive features include a central dome, curved internal galleries, and robust masonry that blends architectural styles from different regions. Today, the tomb attracts tourists, history buffs, and architecture enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into early Mughal funerary design and Delhi's rich heritage.
Architecture of Tomb of Adham Khan
Adham Khan's tomb demonstrates a shifting architectural style, combining an early Mughal feel with strong Lodi and Sayyid influences, a characteristic of Mughal memorial monuments of the period (mid-16th century). Built during Akbar's reign around 1562-1566, its design resembles the typical octagonal plan of earlier Delhi Sultanate tombs, rather than the later Mughal square Charbagh layout.
The tomb is primarily constructed of gray quartzite and faced with limestone plaster on the upper portion. It stands on a raised terrace integrated into the walls of the old fort of Lal Kot. The rubble-built dome represents an early use of this technique in India, while the exterior features simple carved decoration and minimal decorative plaster.
Key structures and features:
- Octagonal central chamber crowned by a large dome
- Verandahs on all eight sides with three arched openings each
- Octagonal terrace with low corner towers
- Maze‑like internal passages and stair access (now restricted)
