About Feroz Shah Kotla Fort

The Firoz Shah Kotla Fort, located in Vikram Nagar, Delhi, was built in 1354 CE by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq of the Tughlaq dynasty. The fort served as a royal citadel and administrative center during his reign, reflecting the Sultanate's political and cultural aspirations. Spread over approximately 30 hectares, the fort showcases Tughlaq-era architectural art with massive stone walls, tall bastions and large courtyards. The fort's design combines Islamic architectural principles with Persian influences, evident in its arches, domes, and architectural design. For centuries, it has captivated historians, archaeologists, and tourists, offering a glimpse into Delhi's ancient urban planning and royal lifestyle, including its distinctive buildings, including mosques, tombs, and pavilions.

Architecture of Feroz Shah Kotla Fort

Feroz Shah Kotla Fort is a strong example of Tughlaq-period military and Islamic architecture, where solid defense features are combined with simple decorative elements. Built during the reign of Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq (1351–1388 CE), the fort shows the advanced building skills of the time. High walls, wide ramparts, and sturdy bastions were designed to protect the city and display royal power. The fort was mainly constructed using rubble stone, neatly cut stone blocks, and lime mortar, which gave the structures strength and long life. Architectural influences from Persia and Afghanistan can be seen in the pointed arches, domed pavilions, and the beautifully designed prayer niches (mihrabs) inside the mosques. The overall design focuses more on durability and function than heavy decoration, which is typical of Tughlaq architecture. Today, these features help visitors understand medieval military planning and the architectural style of the Delhi Sultanate period. Key structures inside the fort include:

  • Fort walls and bastions: 4 main gates and multiple watchtowers
  • Jama Masjid: the principal mosque with arches and minarets
  • Tombs: notably Feroz Shah Tughlaq’s own tomb
  • Baoli (stepwell): a traditional water management structure
  • Courtyards and gardens: several open spaces for royal ceremonies
  • Other pavilions and smaller mosques: spread across the fort complex
The fort’s spatial layout emphasizes defensive planning alongside ceremonial functionality, making it an important study of Sultanate architecture.
