About Purana Qila
The Purana Qila, opposite Pragati Maidan in Delhi, is one of the oldest surviving forts in the city and has deep connections to the early Mughal period. The fort was initially built by the Mughal emperor Humayun as Dinpanah between 1533 and 1538, and later expanded by the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri in the 1540s. Spread over approximately 80 hectares (200 acres), it holds immense archaeological, cultural, and tourism significance. The fort's massive walls, historic gates, and religious buildings reflect Indo-Islamic architectural influences. Excavations at the site have revealed layers of continuous habitation dating back to ancient times, further enhancing its importance as a heritage landmark.
