About Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace, located in Motigali, Khilwat, Hyderabad, India, was the official residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad and the administrative center of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. The palace complex, whose construction began in 1750 during the reign of Salabat Jung and was completed during the reign of Afzal-ud-Daulah (1857–1869), spans approximately 12 acres. Famous for its mix of Mughal, Persian and European Neoclassical influences, the palace features symmetrical courtyards, large halls and decorative plaster decoration. Its design emphasizes formality spaces and royal hospitality, while the intricate workmanship reflects the cultural adulteration of Hyderabad's ruling class. Architecture of Chowmahalla Palace

The Chowmahalla Palace is a blend of Indo-Islamic, Mughal, Persian, and European Neoclassical architectural styles, showcasing both aesthetic and functional planning. Its original construction began in 1750 during the reign of Salabat Jung, and Afzal ad-Daula made major additions and improvements between 1857 and 1869. The palace is built using granite, lime mortar, and plaster, and the entire complex features intricate carvings, arches, and domes. Its layout revolves around several courtyards, each used for ceremonial, residential, or administrative purposes. Notable structures include:

  • Four main palaces: Afzal Mahal, Mahtab Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, and Aftab Mahal
  • Khilwat Mubarak – the central Durbar Hall with a marble throne

  • The clock above the main gate of Chowmahalla Palace is affectionately called "Khilwat Ghari". It has been running continuously for about 251 years.
  • A rare collection is present in the Council Hall located in this palace, in which manuscripts and valuable books are kept very well.
