About Assam State Museum

Assam State Museum is one of the largest multipurpose museums in Guwahati. The museum was established in the year 1940 by the Assam Research Society. The museum presents a large collection of historical and prehistoric times. There is also a small cottage industries museum located inside the premises of the Assam State Museum, which comes under the administration of the Industrial Department of Assam.

The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts and sculptures ranging from the 5th-12th centuries to new artifacts from World War II. The museum is buzzing with activities from history buffs and tourists from all over the world.

This museum presents a clear picture of the rich culture and art of Assam apart from the various traditions and cultures of the states.
The museum has a large collection of Mahatma Gandhi's photographs and correspondence.
The sculpture gallery on the ground floor has sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses from 7th to 14th century in excellent condition like replicas.
Coins, inscriptions, statues etc. of ancient and medieval times can also be seen.
The museum is divided into several galleries like Wood and Crafts Gallery, Manuscript Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, Arms and Ammunition Gallery, Printing Gallery etc.
