About Moazzam Jahi Market
Moazzam Jahi Market is a historic and iconic market located in Hyderabad, India. This market was built during the reign of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan and was inaugurated by his second son Moazzam Jah. It was built in the early 1930s and is named in his honour. This was one of the many projects undertaken by the Board as part of urban renewal.
This market was named after Prince Moazzam Jah, the second son of Osman Ali Khan and Chairman of CIB. The objective behind the market was to provide a commercial space in the area between Hyderabad Railway Station and Residency. At that time, Hyderabad's primary market was still Mir Alam Mandi, located in the older, more congested part of the city. The building was intended to function as a fruit market, but in practice it also sold many other products and goods. In the 1980s, the fruit market in the building was shifted to Kothapet Fruit Market.
Architecture of Moazzam Jahi Market
Moazzam Jahi Market is known for its Indo-European architectural style, with a clock tower at the entrance and a central courtyard. The clock tower adds to the distinctive charm of the market and is a prominent landmark in the area. The architecture of the market is an example of "CIB" or "Otmanian" architecture, a distinctive style that was deliberately developed by the CIB as part of its urban renewal project. This architectural style was intended to convey secularism, and was derived from Kakatiya, Qutb Shahi, Mughal and Asaf Jahi forms.
