About Parvati Hill
Parvati Hill came into existence in the 17th century and was built by the great Peshwa emperor Balaji Baji Rao. It is found 2,000 feet above sea level and Parvati hill offers a sweeping view of Pune. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, though there are idols of other deities as well.
Tourists coming here have to climb about 100 steps to reach the hill. Parvati Hills is the highest point in Pune. The hill is away from the hustle and bustle of city life and the weather remains pleasant throughout the year.
Interesting facts about Parvati Hill
- Apart from the temple, the Peshwa Museum is located here. The museum houses weapons, coins, utensils, wooden furniture, means of transport (palak) and gifts from the time of Peshwas.
- Parvati Hill is also known as the Watch Ground of the Battle of Kirkee. It was from here that King Balaji Bajirao of Peshwas kept an eye on his enemies, the British.
- There was a widespread belief that Parvati Bhavani helps in the speedy treatment of diseases.
- Small temples of Surya, Ganapati, Bhavani Devi and Vishnu are situated at the four corners of this temple. The idol of Goddess Parvati is located in the temple of Goddess Bhavani also known as Ashtabhuja Devi.
