About Shaniwar Wada Palace

Shaniwar Wada in Pune is a historical palace and fort that exemplifies the majesty and grandeur of the Maratha Empire. Bajirao built this palace in 1746 AD, which is known as Shaniwar Wada. Shaniwar Wada Palace is 286 years old which was considered as the official residence of Peshwas. This palace still exists in Pune. The huge statue of Baji Rao I welcomes all the tourists who come here.

Architecture of Shaniwar Wada Palace

This palace is spread over an area of about 625 acres. The architecture of Shaniwar Wada is a classic example of Maratha style of construction mixed with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is decorated with iron nails to deter enemy attacks.

At the top of the door is a small corridor with dome shaped windows definitely taken from Mughal architecture. There are flower carvings and paintings on the walls which resemble the Mughal architectural style.
