About Chattar Manzil

Chattar Manzil, situated on Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Qaisar Bagh, Lucknow, is an iconic example of late Mughal architecture blended with European influences. Constructed during the reign of the Nawabs of Awadh in the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as a royal palace and administrative center. The monument spans approximately 2.5 hectares, featuring a specific rooftop pavilion with ornate chhatris, which give it the name "Umbrella Palace." Chattar Manzil reflects a fusion of Mughal domes, European-style balustrades, and intricately carved balconies, symbolizing the cosmopolitan culture of the Nawabi court. Its historical and cultural significance makes it a major attraction for scholars, tourists, and heritage enthusiasts exploring Lucknow's regal past.

Architecture of Chattar Manzil

Chattar Manzil exemplifies Indo-European architectural synthesis under the Nawabs of Awadh. Construction began under Nawab Ghazi-ud-Din Haider (1814–1827) and was later completed during the reign of Nawab Nasir-ud-Din Haider. The palace incorporates Mughal domes, Gothic-inspired arches, and decorative plasterwork, reflecting European influences that were popular in 19th-century Lucknow.

The main architectural features include:

  • Two prominent gates providing access to the palace complex
  • A central hall crowned with the specific umbrella-shaped chhatris
  • Multiple courtyards designed for ceremonial and administrative functions
  • Smaller auxiliary towers and balconies adorned with carved motifs
  • Gardens laid out in symmetrical Mughal-inspired patterns
  • Integration of underground chambers and service areas
