About Dakshinachitra Museum
Dakshina Chitra is a living-history museum in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, dedicated to South Indian heritage and culture. Dakshin Chitra is a heritage village that reflects the lifestyle of South Indians in their respective states. This is demonstrated through the architecture of the region and the living conditions and habits of the people. Dakshina Chitra Museum was established in 1996 with a vision to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of South India. The architecture, design and exhibits of the museum aim to recreate the ambiance of traditional South Indian villages and capture the essence of various art forms, crafts and daily life practices.
Architecture of Dakshinachitra Museum
The museum is built on 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land taken on a 33-year lease from the Government of Tamil Nadu. This museum is built in the form of a village in the middle of the city. It consists of about 18 different houses showcasing various relevant exhibits to provide a unique experience to the visitors. The architecture of Dakshinachitra is inspired by the traditional styles of South Indian villages and heritage houses. The village complex consists of well-preserved and relocated heritage houses, each representing a different state of South India. The structures are adorned with intricate woodwork, courtyards and verandas, showcasing the architectural diversity of the region.
