About Guindy National Park

Guindy National Park is a protected area of Tamil Nadu located in Chennai, India, it is the 8th smallest national park in India and one of the very few national parks located inside a city. The original area of 505 hectares was established as a reserve forest in 1910. It extends deep inside the Governor's estate with beautiful forests, scrub lands, lakes and rivers.

Interesting facts about Guindy National Park

  1. The park has two large ponds, Kollai (KK Tank) and Appalam Kolam (AK Tank), in addition to two ponds, which usually dry up during the summer. The presence of the park and surrounding green areas resulted in the green lung nickname of Chennai for the Adyar-Guindy region.
  2. There are many other famous institutes around the park like Anna Technological University, Central Leather Research Institute, Cancer Institute and Chennai Race Course. Nearby great leaders of India, Mahatma Gandhi, K. Kamaraj and C. Rajagopalachari, Bakthavatchalam, the park regularly organizes lecture-demonstration in languages like Tamil, Hindi and English.
  3. There is a new interpretation center about the biodiversity of the park. Entry to this protected reserve is restricted, and visitors can enter the main area only if maintained by a forest ranger of the Forest Department.
  4. The rear south-eastern part of the park is connected to the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. On its northern side on Sardar Patel Road are Cancer Institute, CLRI campus, Anna University, Raj Bhavan and Gandhi Mandapam, Kamaraj Memorial and Rajaji Memorial.

By Air:- Chennai International Airport is located at a distance of 10.2 km from Guindy National Park. You can easily hire a taxi, book a cab.

By Bus:- The park is located in the heart of the city and hence a lot of buses pass through the park. 1B, 21G, B29N, D70 and PP21 are some of the lines that will stop at Guindy Bus Stop.
