About Paigah Tombs

The Paigah Tomb, also known as Tomb Shams al-Umara, is a historic tomb complex located in Hyderabad, India. The tombs were built in 1787 by Nawab Taig Jang Bahadur and later renovated by his son Amir e Kabir. The tombs were built as the final resting place for several generations of Paigah nobles like Sir Khurshid Jah, Sir Vikar-ul-Umra, Sultan-ul-Mulk and Zaheer Yar Jang. Within the complex, there is also a small mosque known as Masjid Iqbal-ud-Daula, which adds to the religious and historical significance of the site. The tombs are surrounded by well-maintained gardens and courtyards. The calm and serene environment adds to the charm of the campus and makes it a peaceful place to visit for the visitors.

Architecture of Paigah Tombs

The style of architecture of the Paigah tombs is a fusion of the Mughal and Moorish styles resulting in a unique synthesis. Built of lime and mortar, these cellars have intricate marble inlay work and stucco that are reminiscent of Granada and Seville in Spain. These tombs are magnificent structures, decorated with stucco work, and represent Mughal, Greek, Persian, Asaf Jahi, Rajasthani.

  • The structures are made of marble and were once decorated with precious and semi-precious stones, which changed color with the change of seasons.
  • The tomb is surrounded by a wall which is embellished with lattice work and attractive floral and geometric designs. Each wall is decorated differently with fruits, drums, snakes, flowers, vases etc.
  • The mausoleums themselves have different designs, but all have exemplary craftsmanship, using elaborate lattice work chhatris and marble fences that are made of geometric and floral designs.
  • The tomb of Asman Jah and Begum Khurshid Jah attracts the most tourists.
  • These tombs are 200 years old and represent the final resting places of several generations of Paigah nobles.
