About Sabarmati Ashram

The original ashram was established in May 1915 at the Kocharab Bungalow of Jivanlal Desai, a barrister or friend of Gandhi. At that time ashram was called the Satyagraha Ashram. Mahatma Gandhi wanted to carry out activities like farming, animal husbandry and agriculture so they needed more space.

When Sabarmati Ashram was established on the banks of river Sabarmati, and then from the year 1917 to 1930, Mahatma Gandhi, served as one of the main centers of the Indian freedom struggle. From here on March 12, 1930, that Gandhiji launched the all over India famous Dandi march.

Architecture of Sabarmati Ashram

The present Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya has been designed by Charles Correa, which we see as Mahatma Gandhiji Museum. but Before Ashram Established It is believed that this is one of the ancient ashram sites of Dadhichi Rishi who had donated his bones for a righteous war.

  • Nandini: It was the guest house of the ashram.

Interesting facts about Sabarmati Ashram

  • It was from here that Gandhi led the Dandi march with 78 companions also known as the Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930.
  • The Ashram was confiscated by the British government after the Salt Satyagraha.
  • On 22 July 1933 to dissolve the ashram, which had become a deserted place after the detention of so many. then local citizens decided to preserve it.
  • On 12 March 1930 Gandhi had vowed that he would not return to the Ashram until India had gained independence.
  • Over the years, the Ashram became home to the ideology that set India free. It aided countless other nations and people in their own battles against oppressive forces.
