About Sarkhej Roza
Sarkhej Roza is a famous ancient monument complex near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, built between the 15th and early 16th centuries during the Gujarat Sultanate. It was built around the tomb of the Sufi saint Sheikh Ahmad Khattu Ganj Baksh and later served as a royal burial ground for Sultan Mahmud Begada. Revered as a spiritual site, it also attracts heritage tourists for its serenity and historical depth. Built during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Begada (1458–1511 CE), the complex, spread over approximately 34 hectares, showcases the exquisite Indo-Islamic aesthetics, combined with local craftsmanship and water-based planning.
Architecture of Sarkhej Roza
Sarkhej Roza represents a mature phase of Indo-Islamic architecture under the Gujarat Sultanate, Speciality by simple decor and structural clarity. Construction began around 1451 CE during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shah II and was significantly expanded during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Begada (1458–1511 CE). The complex extensively use locally quarried sandstone, lime mortar, and traditional post-and-lintel techniques, along with Islamic arches and domes. Persian influences are evident in the symmetry and specific planning, while Gujarati traditions are evident in the carved brackets and stone with a hole screens. A large stepped water tank forms the visual and symbolic core, showcasing advanced hydraulic engineering and climate-responsive design. The layout offers spiritual strength, with upside-down, water symbolism, and open courtyards and shady halls for contemplative activities.
