The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) has put forth plans for the development of the Varanasi Metrolite, an urban Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This system is set to encompass two lines and a total of 26 stations within Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance urban transportation options in the city.
In 2015, RITES formulated the initial Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, outlining a robust heavy-rail system. The blueprint emphasized an underground construction for around 80% of Phase 1's routes. Subsequently, the Uttar Pradesh state cabinet endorsed this DPR on April 18, 2016, followed by its approval by the Central Government's cabinet on May 23, 2016.
In 2017, the project was halted because its expense and ridership forecasts did not align with the new Metro Rail Policy of the Government of India, making it financially unsustainable.
