Agra Metro — History, Facts & Expansion Plan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the route from Taj East Metro Station to Mankameshwar Metro Station of the Yellow Metro Line on 6 March 2024, which includes a total of 6 metro stations. The total length of Agra Metro of Uttar Pradesh is 29.65 km (Phase-1), out of which only 6 km of metro has been inaugurated. Currently, work on 21 stations of Agra Metro is under construction. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 1 of Agra Metro was carefully prepared by RITES and officially submitted to the Uttar Pradesh State Government for approval on June 30, 2016. In an effort to facilitate the launch of the project, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL) was appointed as the coordination body in 2017, tasked with bringing together all the relevant stakeholders involved in the endeavour.

  • Agra Metro Rail Project at a glance
  • Total cost of metro project Rs 8,379 crore
  • The metro will have two corridors of 30 kilometers long.
  • A total of 27 stations will be built in the metro, of which 20 will be elevated and 7 underground.
  • First Corridor 14 km from Taj East Gate to Sikandra
  • Second Corridor 16 km from Agra Cantt Station to Kalindi Vihar

Agra Metro construction work and progress:

  • In February 2019, this project got approval from the Central Government Cabinet. Subsequently, in July 2020, the Supreme Court gave permission for its construction with the condition that UPMRCL (Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited) would strictly follow 11 specified conditions.
  • On December 7, 2020, construction began on the initial 4 km stretch of Phase 1, specifically from the Taj East Gate to the Taj Mahal ramp, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister remotely.
  • The primary corridor of the project stretches for 7 km and consists of six stations (three underground and three elevated) connecting Jama Masjid and Taj East Gate.
  • The entire work of Phase 1 is expected to be completed in 2026. The project is being funded through a combination of contributions. Both the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh share equal equity.
  • Additionally, a loan of approximately 450 million euros (equivalent to approximately Rs 4860 crore) from the European Investment Bank (EIB), which was approved in December 2021, will also contribute to financing the project.

  • Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and CCTV cameras etc. will be installed in the trains.
  • Agra Metro trains will get power from third rail i.e. the third rail running parallel to the tracks, hence there will be no need for setup of poles and wires.
  • Each train will have 24 CCTV cameras, whose video feed will directly reach the train operator and the central security room at the depot.
