Gurgaon Metro — History, Facts & Expansion Plan
- The Rapid Metro Gurgaon, Haryana is a light metro system connecting the key commercial areas of Gurgaon and serving as a feeder link to the Delhi Metro.
- It provides interchange access with the Delhi Metro Yellow Line at Sikanderpur Metro Station.
- A 3.2 km metro line between Sikanderpur and National Highway 8 was originally proposed in September 2007.
- In 2008, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) was invited to oversee the metro line’s construction.
- Following a new tender issued in July 2008, the DLF-IL&FS consortium emerged as the sole bidder.
- The project was initially conceived as a collaborative venture between Enso Group, DLF, and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS). The ₹9 billion (US$112.7 million) contract was awarded in July 2009, with a completion timeline of 30 months.
- The foundation stone was laid on 11 August 2009.
- Although originally planned to open in 2012, the first phase of the system was inaugurated on 14 November 2013.
- Construction of Phase 2 began in April 2013 with an initial deadline of July 2015, and it was eventually opened to the public on 31 March 2017.
- On 7 June 2023, the Union Government's Cabinet approved an additional ₹5452 crore for a 28.5 km-long metro network featuring 27 new stations to connect with the existing network under Phase III.
- Rapid Metro, India’s first fully privately financed metro system, connects NH-8 to the Delhi Metro via Cyber City and Golf Course Road.
- First commercial operation began on 14th November 2013.
- The promotional fare for both phases is ₹20 and ₹35. DMRC tokens and Smart Cards are valid on the Rapid Metro network.

- Sikanderpur Metro Station serves as the interchange point, connecting the Rapid Metro with the Delhi Metro Yellow Line.
- The Rapid Metro is a fully elevated rapid transit system designed to serve the commuters and residents of Gurugram.
- Each train car features four sets of electric bi-parting sliding plug doors on both sides.
- The trains are powered by a 750 V DC supply drawn from the third rail system. The use of ballast-less tracks and a flange lubrication system minimizes vibration, noise, and air pollution.
- Train speed is automatically regulated on curves using the ATP/ATC system, reducing sound levels during turns.
- For passenger safety, every platform is equipped with Emergency Stop Plungers, while the Blue Light Station feature allows passengers to contact the Control Room in case of emergencies.
Gurgaon Metro Network Expansion Plan:
Gurgaon has an ambitious plan for metro expansion. This 28.8 km long corridor will connect Millennium City to Cyber City via 27 elevated stations. The first phase of the main expansion will be a 15.3 km long, 14 station corridor from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9, with a spur to Dwarka Expressway.
Bhondsi Village to Gurugram Railway Station
This 17 km long route will connect densely populated areas and major business districts. It will run along Sohna Road and connect to the Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar RRTS line at Rajiv Chowk.
Golf Course Extension Road to Sector-5
This 13 km long route will run along Sheetla Mata Road and connect densely populated areas and major business districts. It will stop at Millennium City Centre Metro Station, Signature Tower Crossing, Rana Pratap Chowk and Atul Kataria Chowk.

The total length of the Gurugram Metro Loop project corridor will be approximately 28.80 km (17.90 mi), with 27 elevated stations with six interchange stations.
