To encourage people to use bicycles for short trips to metro stations, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has decided to provide free bicycle parking at nine metro stations in the city. These stations are spread across three lines: two on the Purple Line, three on the Green Line, and four on the newly built Yellow Line.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has installed around 20 kilometres of barricades, along with 17 kilometres of blinkers and LED lights, at its construction sites in the city. The DMRC said that over 270 traffic marshals have been deployed at these locations to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles around the metro construction sites. Road studs have been installed to slow down traffic at sensitive traffic points near the construction sites. Warning signs indicating work in progress or an alternative route ahead have also been installed.

Work on Corridor 2 of the Patna Metro has entered a crucial phase, with tunneling officially beginning between PMCH station and Gandhi Maidan. The first tunnel boring machine (TBM) has already excavated approximately 20 meters, while preparations are underway for the second TBM to begin work. Officials expect the second machine to begin work within a week, completing the completion of this crucial section of the city's underground network.

The BMRCL has confirmed that the much-awaited Pink Line corridor will be opened in a phased manner by September 2026. The 7.5-km-long elevated section running parallel to Bannerghatta Road, from Tavarekere to Kalena Agrahara, is expected to be operational by March 2026.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is moving ahead with plans to open a key portion of Phase 2, nearly a year ahead of schedule. The 12-kilometer-long elevated section between Koyambedu and Butt Road is now slated for completion by June, well ahead of the original June 2027 target. This section, which includes 13 elevated stations, is part of Corridor 5 of Phase 2 – the 44.6-kilometer Madhavaram-Sholinganallur line, designed to connect several high-density residential and employment areas crisscrossing the city.

The Kolkata Metro Railway has launched the QR code-enabled return ticket facility for passengers on all its corridors. Passengers availing this facility will no longer need to purchase tickets from metro counters before their return journey, a Metro Railway spokesperson said. This will save them time and avoid the hassle of standing in long queues at the counters upon returning from their destination station.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) stated that metro services on all lines will begin at 3 a.m. on January 26th. The early start is intended to facilitate the movement of people attending Republic Day celebrations on duty. The DMRC stated that trains on all lines will run at 15-minute intervals from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. After 6 a.m., metro services will operate as per the regular timetable for the rest of the day.

According to official sources, metro rail services between Vadapalani and Poonamallee are expected to commence by February, following final approval from the Indian Railway Board. Under Phase II, a third metro corridor is being developed, covering a total distance of 26 kilometers from Marina Beach Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass. The Vadapalani-Poonamallee section is the first to be operational. Initially, metro trains on this route will run with drivers. Later, there are plans to introduce driverless metro trains on this corridor, which will be a significant technological milestone for the Chennai Metro.

Mumbaikars have received significant news. The opening of the Metro 9 line, running between Dahisar and Mira-Bhayander, has finally been approved. The first phase of the Metro 9 line, from Dahisar to Kashigaon in Mumbai, has received the final CRMS (Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety) certification. Therefore, there are no longer any obstacles to the operation of the first phase of this line. Significantly, the first phase of Metro 9 is expected to begin in February. With the final approval from the CRMS, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has cleared the way for the Metro's inauguration. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has written to Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, seeking his intervention to expedite the central government's final approval for the long-pending Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project. In the letter to the Union Minister, Revanth Reddy stated that the central government had granted in-principle approval to the project through a letter dated January 15, 2026. That letter also proposed the formation of a joint committee of central and state officials, with Telangana nominated to nominate two members. This joint committee will oversee the transfer process for Phase 1 of the Hyderabad Metro.

The Telangana government has decided to expedite the process of acquiring the Phase-I project of the Hyderabad Metro Rail from Larsen & Toubro and expedite the formalities to complete the acquisition as soon as possible. On September 25, the Telangana government signed an agreement with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMHRL) for the complete acquisition of the existing Phase-I of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project after L&T decided to exit the project due to mounting losses. Under the agreement, the state government agreed to assume L&T's existing debt of around Rs 13,000 crore as well as return Rs 2,000 crore to the company as a one-time settlement of its equity investment.

The Bangalore Metro project has progressed as all six coaches of the 8th trainset manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems for the Yellow Line of the Bangalore Metro arrived at the Hebbagodi depot on January 19, 2026. The Yellow Line of the Bangalore Metro stretches 19.15 km between RV Road and Bommasandra and includes 16 stations. A senior official of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said that the coaches will first be assembled into a complete trainset before undergoing a series of mandatory tests. As per the MoU signed between China's CRRC Corporation Limited and Titagarh Rail Systems, Titagarh Rail Systems will supply 14 trains for the Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro and 20 train sets for the Purple Line.

The Delhi Metro project has progressed as the Delhi government has released funds totaling ₹3,386.18 crore for the remaining three corridors of Delhi Metro Phase 4. Officials said the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G-Block corridor and the Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor have been placed under a single financial framework, with a total project cost of ₹8,399.81 crore. The Delhi government's contribution to this combined phase is ₹1,987.86 crore. Meanwhile, the estimated cost of the Rithala-Kundli corridor is approximately ₹6,230.99 crore. The Delhi government will provide ₹1,398.32 crore for this corridor. This extension will further enhance connectivity in the NCR and address transportation challenges in the capital.

Five wards in Mumbai will face low-pressure or suspended water supply for three days starting January 20, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation begins pipeline work related to Metro Line 7A. The work will last for about 44 hours from 9 am on Tuesday (January 20) to Thursday (January 22). According to the BMC, water supply will be either reduced or completely stopped in parts of G North, K East, S, H East and N wards, and regular supply timings will also be changed.
