  • Lucknow Metro is a mass rapid transit (MRT) system in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Lucknow Metro Network Expansion Plan: Phase I

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the construction of the 11.165 km long East-West Corridor connecting Charbagh to Vasant Kunj of the Lucknow Metro, known as the Blue Line or Phase 1B. The corridor will have a total of 12 stations, including seven underground and five elevated stations. The project is expected to be operational by June 30, 2027.

Additionally, the existing Red Line is also being extended. On one side, the line will go from CCR Airport to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SJPGI), while on the other side it will extend from Munshipulia to National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

  • Construction of the line began on 27 September 2014, and it commenced commercial operations on 5 September 2017.
  • Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) has been renamed the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC).

  • UPMRC provides free RO drinking water, toilets, escalators, and lifts at all stations.

Lucknow Metro News & Updates

A metro train traveling from Munshi Pulia to the airport in Lucknow experienced a sudden brake failure. This caused panic among the passengers on board. Upon receiving the information, the metro's technical team arrived at the scene and, after about 15 minutes of effort, manually released the jammed brakes. According to metro officials, the brakes jammed due to a technical problem. The metro service was disrupted for 15 minutes as a result. During this time, other metro services were diverted to different platforms.

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has announced an ambitious plan to develop a massive 1,575-kilometer metro network across Uttar Pradesh by 2047. UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar unveiled the comprehensive blueprint during the "Developed Uttar Pradesh for Developed India @ 2047" seminar. The initial phase will focus on expanding the metro system in the state's three established metro cities, with 225 kilometers planned for Lucknow, 200 kilometers for Kanpur, and 100 kilometers for Agra. Additionally, the plan proposes a 150-kilometer network each in Noida-Greater Noida, Varanasi, and Prayagraj. 50 kilometers of metro network are planned in key districts such as Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, and Meerut. Approximately 790 kilometers of this metro infrastructure is targeted to be completed by 2035. Emphasizing the project's financial viability, Kumar stated that the state government's annual contribution for the initial 525 kilometers of expansion will be ₹1,040 crore.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved Phase 1-B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project. In total, the corridor will have 12 stations covering a distance of 11.165 km. Upon completion, the total network in the city will be 34 km. Phase 1B of the Lucknow Metro Project will add around 11.165 km of new metro lines, significantly improving public transport in the oldest and most densely populated areas of the city that currently lack efficient connectivity.
