About Kukrail Forest

The history of Kukrail Forest is closely linked to wildlife conservation and environmental protection. Kukrail Reserve Forest was planted on 5000 acres in the 1950s to serve as the green lungs of the city. It has a Crocodile Breeding Center which was established in 1978 for the breeding and conservation of the endangered freshwater crocodile, one of the 3 native species of crocodiles in India. The center was funded by the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests. It is an initiative that aims to protect and conserve natural habitats in urban environments. Kukrail Reserve Forest also has a deer park where one can see sambar, blackbuck and spotted deer. Along with this, the Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh has also started the proposal to develop a leopard rescue center in Kukrail. The forest department has several nurseries spread throughout the forest, which are connected by nature trails and sell saplings at low prices. This popular tourist spot in Lucknow is also known for bird watching as it is home to more than 200 species of local and migratory birds.
