About Nehru Planetarium

The Famous Nehru Planetarium in the capital city of New Delhi is found in the green environs of the Teen Murti Bhawan, which was an official dwelling of India's former and first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

It has now been converted into a museum in his memory. This Planetarium offers an opportunity to explore the cosmological system in the sky like a theatre with a dome-like screen that is created out of glass fiber and approximately 265 people can watch it together. Events related to the astronomy like quiz contests, lectures, workshops keep taking place over here.

Architecture of Nehru Planetarium

This imposing structure covers a massive area of 30 acres and was carved out of white stone and stucco to give it its signature look. It stands to face the south side of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Post independence it was converted into Jawaharlal Lal Nehru's personal residence and continued to be so for the next 16 years. Ensuing his death, it was converted to a cenotaph dedicated to him.

  3. The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund was established to promote his ideas and took the lead in building the Nehru Planetarium which aimed to promote astronomy education.
  4. One of the major attractions of this place is Soyuz T-10 which carried India's first astronaut Rakesh Sharma along with his space suit and mission journal.
