About Satkhanda
Satkhanda is an unfinished watchtower located in the Husainabad area of Lucknow, built during the reign of Nawab Mohammed Ali Shah of Awadh in 1837. It was conceived as a seven-story structure for astronomical observations and moon-gazing, but construction halted after the Nawab's death, and it remained unfinished. The monument reflects Lucknow’s late-Nawabi cultural phase and remains an important heritage landmark for visitors exploring the Husainabad complex. Though the exact land area is not officially recorded, Satkhanda occupies a compact precinct within the historic Husainabad estate. Its Indo-Islamic form shows influences from global architectural landmarks.
Architecture of Satkhanda
Satkhanda represents a specific example of late Indo-Islamic architecture with clear European influences. Commissioned by Nawab Mohammed Ali Shah in 1837, the structure was inspired by the Qutub Minar in Delhi and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, reflecting the Nawab’s interest in eclectic design. Built primarily with Lakhauri bricks and lime mortar, the tower rises approximately 30 meters but remains incomplete at four storeys instead of the planned seven. The circular plan, tapering vertical profile, and arched openings demonstrate skilled masonry and load distribution techniques of the period.
The tower forms part of the Husainabad architectural ensemble governed by the Nawabs of Awadh during the early 19th century. Its minimal decoration emphasizes structural expression rather than surface decoration.
