About Vidhana Soudha

Vidhana Soudha It is a truly secular building, reflecting the features of British, Dravidian and Indo-Islamic architecture. Its construction was started by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951 with the then Chief Minister KC Reddy and was completed in 1956. Owned by the Government of Karnataka, this venerable institution-cum-monument rises to a height of 46 meters, while spread over 60 acres.

The main attraction of Vidhana Soudh is the main entrance which leads to the foyer of the first floor which has 45 grand staircases which provide access to the assembly hall.

Architecture of Vidhana Soudha

Vidhana Soudha is a granite building that has four floors above and one floor below ground level. It has spread across an area of 2,300 by 1500 feet and is the largest legislative building in India.

  2. The building is 150 feet tall and has a well designed and splendid Neo-Dravidian technique of architecture.
  3. Vidhana Soudha was completed in 4 years with 5000 laborers and about 1500 chisels, woodworkers and masons.
  4. The central dome of the building is sixty feet in diameter and is supported by eight pillars. It also has six smaller domes, four in the front and two in the back.
  5. Almost all the unskilled labor employed in its construction were criminals, who were given their liberty upon its completion.
  6. Vidhana Soudha is largely built with "Bangalore granite", excavated from the areas around Mallasandra and Hesaraghatta.
